In fact, according to Senior Webmaster Trends Analyst John Mueller, the change occurred \u201csome years ago\u201d, but a public announcement was never made &#8211; until now. As one would expect, webmasters all over the world are in a ruckus. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s no surprise. This change impacts <a href=\"\/?page_id=27223\"><strong>search engine optimisation<\/strong><\/a> efforts, especially for larger websites. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here, we break down what this tag eradication means and the best practice for sites moving forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-cards=\"hidden\" data-lang=\"en\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Spring cleaning! <br><br>As we evaluated our indexing signals, we decided to retire rel=prev\/next. <br>Studies show that users love single-page content, aim for that when possible, but multi-part is also fine for Google Search. In order for this to happen, your page must first be <em>indexed <\/em>by Google. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Indexing is the practice of adding a page or website to the Google search results.<\/strong>  Indexing sounds like one of a million other pseudo-tech terms that can be confused with each other, but it\u2019s very important to get this one right. In essence, if your page is indexed, it means that Google knows your page exists and keeps it in its data banks to be compared to the search terms people type into the search engine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, indexing is a fundamental step to being found online. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When your page is indexed it is also subsequently ranked based on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pureseo.co.nz\/how-to-get-to-the-top-of-google-search-richard-conway\/\"><strong>number of factors<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> such as the presence of relevant keywords in your meta-title and description. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In particular, if a number of website pages and their contents are connected to each other in succession, like the pages of a book, then website developers typically want these pages to be indexed together. You&#8217;ve probably been on a website that prompted you to click on pages 1, 2, 3 and so on, when reading an article online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s where the extinct \u201c<em>rel=next\/prev<\/em>\u201d tag comes into play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is \u201crel=next\/prev\u201d?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;<strong>Rel=next\/prev<\/strong>&#8221; is an HTML tag that web developers have used for years in order to cluster successive pages together. In <a href=\"https:\/\/webmasters.googleblog.com\/2011\/09\/pagination-with-relnext-and-relprev.html\">Google&#8217;s words<\/a>: &#8220;<em>these tags indicate a relationship between component URLs in a paginated series<\/em>.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clustering the pages means that the \u201cindexing properties\u201d \u2013 things like back links and keyword relevance \u2013 are all consolidated and the series is indexed all together in Google, rather than as a collection of separate pages. The tag also ensures that users are sent to the page most relevant to their query when they search for something on one of them, rather than just being sent to the first page. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pages are similarly ranked altogether, so while the first page would have a higher ranking than the others had they not been indexed together, the \u201crel=next\/prev\u201d tag attributes that ranking to all of the pages in the series, which is good for the owner of the domain. The higher the page ranking, the more like you are to show up on the SERP, and the more likely the customer is to click on your page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But alas, Google has done some spring cleaning and swept it from its algorithm. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why doesn\u2019t Google support it anymore?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Google apologised for not notifying anyone about the change in their documentation, calling it an \u201c<em>oversight and something we should have communicated proactively<\/em>\u201d. It appears that their reasons have to do with the modern evolution of web design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In recent years we&#8217;ve seen a change from separate associated pages on websites to one long, continuous scrolling concept. This also means that there has been a significant reduction in the number of pages needing to be indexed together, at least according to Google. <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2Fwz8m1\">Mueller commented<\/a> that \u201cpeople make good sites, for a large part\u201d, citing this as one of the larger reasons Google struck the tag from their documentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>\u201cFor the most part, we just index the pages as we find them, so as we\u2019ve recommended for a long time, it\u2019s good to make sure that all pages can stand on their own.\u201d <\/em><\/p><cite>John Mueller, Senior Webmaster Trends Analyst at Google<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What we recommend<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Going forward, it\u2019s important to remember a\nfew things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Google is not the only search engine.<\/strong> Yes, it is most prominently used, but that does not necessarily mean that you should strike the tag from all back-end development. Search engines like Bing and Yahoo still support rel=next\/prev, even if it is just partially, and keeping the tag in your code will not have a bad impact on your site\u2019s ranking.<\/li><li><strong>Where you can, keep your content on one page. <\/strong>If you need to adopt a long, scrolling design for your web content in order to achieve this, then there are plenty of designs and templates out there to help you on your journey. <\/li><li><strong>Keep up to date as much as possible with changes in Google documentation.<\/strong> As the most widely-used search engine in the world, and especially in New Zealand, Google&#8217;s support for your website is crucial to digital marketing campaign\u2019s success.
