But failing isn\u2019t just the unglamorous archenemy of success. In fact, failure is just success in progress. After all, it\u2019s in the worst of times that we learn and grow the most.<del>.<\/del><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Friday the 21st of June, top business leaders and\nentrepreneurs from all over the world came together at the 4th <strong>Unfiltered\nLive<\/strong> in Auckland to discuss their biggest challenges<ins><del>,<\/del><\/ins>\nand shed some light on how to turn their sh!tshows into worldwide hit-shows. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<br>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">This Year\u2019s Theme: Fall Forward Auckland<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cIf I\u2019m going to fall, I don\u2019t want to fall back on anything, except my faith. I want to fall forward. At least I figure that way I\u2019ll see what I\u2019m about to hit. Fall forward.&#8221;<\/p><cite>Denzel Washington<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The theme of this year\u2019s Unfiltered Live was based on Denzel\nWashington\u2019s famous speech at the University of Pennsylvania. In it, he talked about\nthree main reasons why we should be taking risks: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>failure is inevitable, you just need the guts to\nfail, <\/li><li>failure means you\u2019re trying, and lastly, <\/li><li>it\u2019s the best way to figure out where you\u2019re\ngoing.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Every single speaker on the Unfiltered stage told stories of\nhow they\u2019d failed to epic proportions (one of them almost burned down a barn). But\nwhat mattered was that they chose to keep going, to trust their gut, and to <strong>fall\nforward<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Local and international business leaders alike shared three of their biggest failures on the open stage and how they overcame them. If you missed this year\u2019s Unfiltered Live, or are trying to get out of a tough pinch yourself, we\u2019ve categorised everyone\u2019s most epic failures in this recap<ins>,<\/ins> so you too can learn from some of the world\u2019s most successful business-people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s get into it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<br>\n\n\n\n<br>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Failures in Business<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>No one wants their business ventures to fail, and no one\nwants to lose thousands of dollars. Despite that, it quickly became clear that most\nof the speakers were, at some point in their career, in crushing debt and under\noverwhelming financial pressure before they finally created the company that\nstuck the landing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.pureseo.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/IMG_20190621_085157-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Unfiltered Live 2019 stage photo\" class=\"wp-image-15537 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/225;\" \/><figcaption>The Unfiltered Live 2019 stage<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Gary Hirshberg, Co-Founder &amp; Chairman of Stonyfield Farm, shared a particularly gripping conception story. Remember the burning barn? That was just the tip of the iceberg. The Stonyfield epic involves snowstorms, chicken dung on machinery, late-night conversations with a mother-in-law to borrow money behind his wife\u2019s back, and some truth-concealing to get corporations on board. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The brochure was right \u2013 Gary definitely f%cked up so you\ndon\u2019t have to! Particularly when establishing a business, he says to keep these\nthree points in mind: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cDon\u2019t rush the big decisions; trust is great, but get it in writing; and don\u2019t shortcut the homework.\u201d <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>So, you\u2019ve got a good idea or a good product. Great. But who is it for? Whether you\u2019re B2B or B2C Dr Elizabeth Iorns, Co-Founder &amp; CEO of Science Exchange, reminded us about the importance of knowing your audience. When pitching a product or service, always <strong>tailor your message to what your audience is looking for<\/strong>. \u201cDetermine objectives and audience perspective &#8211; and then prepare.\u201d That, or \u2013 according to her cautionary tale \u2013 show a group of professional scientists a bunch of spicy memes that don\u2019t get a single giggle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And if you\u2019re thinking of expanding or developing your\nbusiness, it\u2019s good to take a step back and really consider that decision\nbefore jumping in. Peter Gordon, critically acclaimed NZ-born chef of Maori and\nScottish descent, said one of his failures was \u201c<strong>believing that development\nwill always be good for your business.<\/strong>\u201d Sometimes, what works, works. You\ndon\u2019t have to chase change. Make sure you make decisions that are right for <em>your<\/em>\nbusiness. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, despite all the ways you can avoid catastrophic failure in business, we\u2019ll finish off this section with something from Kevin Roberts, Founder and CEO of Red Rose Consulting<ins>,<\/ins> and former Executive Chairman of Saatchie &amp; Saatchie. When you fail &#8211; and you will &#8211; \u201c<strong>Fail fast, learn fast, fix fast.<\/strong>\u201d Kevin, despite all his success, made it a point to remind us that we\u2019re all programmed to avoid failure, but when we do experience it, it\u2019s important to get through it as efficiently as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cAdapt, improvise, overcome.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<br>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Failures with People<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Surprisingly enough, many of the failures the speakers\nshared involved <em>people<\/em>. That is, they hired or worked with the wrong\npeople. This makes perfect sense, considering your business is only as\nextraordinary as its people. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Elizabeth Iorns was the first to admit that they hired\nexecutives and partnered with big companies <em>too early.<\/em> When hiring your\ntop-level employees, trust your gut, and try before you buy. If you hired\nwrong, then fire fast. But according to Shrandre, their top-level employees all came from referrals and networking, which highlights the importance of making and strengthening connections with like-minded people. Basically, you shouldn\u2019t settle for someone who works <em>for<\/em> you, choose someone who can work <em>with<\/em> you. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Craig Piggott, Founder &amp; CEO of Halter, reinforced Shrandre\u2019s idea, saying that \u201c<em>talent attracts talent<\/em>.\u201d Think of all your best hires. Does this apply to you and your team? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ll wrap up this section with some strong insights from David\nRogier, Co-Founder &amp; CEO of America\u2019s MasterClass. <strong>\u201cWhen I need to hire\nsomeone, I\u2019m already six months behind.\u201d<\/strong> If you feel like your company or\nteam is currently understaffed, then this one might hit close to home. We all\nknow the time and effort investment it takes to onboard a new hire, train them\nup to speed, and then finally getting them to produce the great results that we\nexpect. So, if your company is expanding or anticipating growth, get ahead and hire\nearly!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<br>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Personal Failures<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone fails, but it\u2019s the personal failures \u2013 those that\naffect not just our businesses, but also our lives- which can make the biggest impact.\nMistakes happen due to a lack of foresight, or experience, or a combination of\nboth. But from what we\u2019ve learned at Unfiltered &#8211; and this can\u2019t be said enough\n&#8211; it\u2019s <em>how<\/em> we handle these personal failures that really makes a\ndifference to our business\u2019 bottom line, and our personal lives overall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ll start with Tim Brown\u2019s secret to success as Co-Founder\n&amp; Co-CEO of sustainable shoe brand Allbirds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cBe honest with yourself [about] the stuff you\u2019re good at and the stuff you\u2019re not good at.\u201d <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Tim found it extremely vital to focus on <em>one<\/em> thing\nyou want to do \u2013 whether that\u2019s playing in professional sports or creating the\nmost comfortable shoes in the world. Figure out where your talent and passion\nlies, and stick with it. Sometimes, we can get distracted by what we think we\nshould do, or what others think we should do. Focus is key. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.pureseo.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/IMG_20190621_140512-300x209.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15539 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/209;\" \/><figcaption>The Unfiltered Live 2019 Panel 1: High-Stakes Leadership<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>To add to that, Roberts then said, \u201c<em>being obsessed isn\u2019t sexy<\/em>.\u201d But, we can either be obsessed or be average. For our business to succeed, we need to get deeply involved and stay close to the details. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Offering a slightly contrasting but still pertinent piece of\nwisdom, David Rogier revealed that one of his biggest personal mistakes was\nequating how well his company was doing with his own self-worth. You and your\nbusiness don\u2019t need to morph together into one entity. When we\u2019re in the thick\nof it, it can be so easy to attach our sense of achievement to the company\u2019s\nsuccess. So, how did he get out of this crippling mindset?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cPick something that, even if it fails, you\u2019re going to be proud of.\u201d <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, we\u2019ll conclude this section with what was perhaps\nthe most personal failure divulged at the event. It was delivered by Taranaki\u2019s\nvery own Gavin Faull, Chairman &amp; President of Swiss-Belhotel International.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was flying the world,\u201d he said. At one point, he was\nspending 80 per cent of his time flying from one country to another, leaving\nhim with minimal time for family. But his three sons, all of whom now work for\nthe brand, corrected this mistake for him. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of us have family, whether that\u2019s our partners, children, parents, etc. For many, they are our primary source of support and encouragement. The human journey is not meant to be travelled alone, so don\u2019t tunnel-vision on achieving business success and forget to spend quality time with those who you care about. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cYou can\u2019t do it alone.
