Top Tip Tuesday – Share Triggers And How They Can Help With SEO

Marketing is all about psychology. If you’re able to understand and tap into your audience’s psychology, you will be able to vastly increase the effectiveness and reach of your marketing efforts.

One way that psychology influences marketing is through share triggers. Share triggers are psychological tricks you can use to boost the shareability of your content, and thus improve your SEO. In today’s Top Tip Tuesday video, Laura talks about improving your SEO strategy by utilising these psychological tricks.

Storytelling Through Share Triggers

Human beings are social creatures. We like to share stories with one another in order to make them laugh, cry or understand a new viewpoint. We also share stories to improve our own social standing.

When you think about it, content is nothing more than a story. If you want your story to be shared, you have to ask yourself: what makes for an effective story? The elements that make for effective storytelling are what we mean when we talk about share triggers.

Share triggers are the unique selling points in your content that makes it stand out from the generic content that is widely available on the Internet. Effective share triggers also encourage people to take actions, such as researching more about a brand or company or buying a product.

Here are a few share triggers you can keep in mind the next time you write a piece of content:

  • Content that arouses strong emotion (e.g. awe, anger, surprise, fear) is more likely to be shared than bland content
  • Positive content is more likely to be shared than negative content
  • Practical content is more likely to be shared than generic content.
  • Content that tells a story (think: the popular ‘Humans of New York’ Facebook page) is more likely to be shared than strictly educational content.
