Get Your Homepage to Rank with These Top Optimisation Tips

Homepage optimisation is still very much an integral part of any search engine optimisation campaign. After all, it’s the “home” of your site – this is where people will find basic information about your products and services. It is also here where both searchers and search engines will judge your authority and relevancy on their original search query. Here at Pure SEO, we can’t stress the importance of homepage optimisation enough!

We’ve compiled some basic yet vital homepage optimisation tips to help everyone get started on their journey to a homepage that’s ready for an SEO campaign.

Check them out below!

1. Optimise your Page Title and Body with relevant keywords and content.

This may sound like a no-brainer to some, but there are a lot of websites out there with thin, non-descriptive content on their homepage. They might think that their business is self-explanatory, or that their target audience has already had previous experience with their brand or services. But if there are no keywords in the website’s title or body content, Google and all the other search engines won’t be able to identify what the page is about. And if Google can’t find you, your customers can’t find you either.

In this age, content usually means information, and with more information comes greater relevance.

And don’t think you can simply chuck in random keywords here and there! That’s called keyword stuffing and will get your site blacklisted by big search engines.

2. Have an efficient navigation bar.

And an efficient sitemap and footer to match!

‘Efficient’ in this case simply means that everything is laid out and organised in a logical, easy-to-understand manner. This is so your customers know exactly where to go to learn more about your company, or better yet, purchase your services.

Your footer should contain all the helpful information about your business and your website, such as your sitemap, terms and conditions, privacy policy, and the like.

3. Use H2 Headings.

Just like the one right above.

H2 headings are great for breaking up the text in a page and adding white space. These help your site visitors better skim content for the information they need. Too much text in a small space can look messy and complex, regardless of whether or not your text is easy to understand. If it looks hard to read, people won’t read it.

4. Use high-quality photos.

In today’s day and age where our handheld phones are able to take photos in 12 megapixels, there is no excuse to use pixelated or blurry photos. This tip is more for pleasing your visitors – if your photos are of a high, crisp quality, your site appears more professional overall. However, always aim for the smallest possible file size so it doesn’t affect page loading speed. Learn more about PageSpeed Insights!

Don’t forget to fill in the ‘alt text’ attribute for that extra SEO best practice bump. Search engines can’t ‘look’ at your images, so they read the alt text attributes instead.

5. Provide all the basic information.

Basic information should be conspicuous and easy to find. This doesn’t just include your products and services, but also your contact information, location, and even social media links.

Including social media links on your website makes it easier for you to reach your target audience, since they’ll be exposed to your brand outside of your website.

6. Use engaging Calls-to-Action.

Searchers visit your site because (whether they know it or not) they want to take specific actions. Whether they want to learn more, download content resources, or go ahead and purchase your product or service, you need engaging calls-to-action to give your visitors a soft but palpable nudge in the right direction.

Follow these six actionable steps for optimising your homepage and you’re well on your way to providing a better user experience and getting those coveted page one rankings on Google!
